"Family Reading Affects School
Success"
By Cheryl Miceli
Research consistently supports that reading to young children has many
benefits. It not only helps them develop language skills, but it also
- Encourages literacy development
- Develops reading comprehension skills
- Influences overall success in school
Reading aloud to your child is such an important factor for school success
that you'll want to make certain that you make it an important part of your day.
Five Tips For Reading Aloud to Your Child
-
In two parent homes, parents should take turns
reading so the child sees that both parents value reading.
-
Incorporate a reading time into your daily routine. It's a great activity at the end of the day. It helps your child to unwind and relax. It's also a wonderful opportunity for being close to you. Choose a comfy spot where you can both snuggle up and enjoy a good book.
-
Choose a variety of books to read aloud. You can go to your local library's youth department for a listing of books that young children enjoy. Exposing children to a variety of books at an early age helps to expand their knowledge base and satisfy their constant quest for information.
-
Take your child to the library and bookstores to look at books. Let him help you choose books to read aloud.
-
Treat books with respect. Start a home library. Give your child the present of books for birthdays, holidays, or for a special treat. This will teach your child that a book is special.
